Aberystwyth University Canoe Club

The Lowdown!

Who are we?

AUCC consists of all sorts of people from Aberystwyth University; mainly students but some staff frequent these parts too. We range in ability from total novice up to sposored paddlers and local heros, but the only requirement to join our club is a fun loving attitude (and a Sporty Card).

What do we do?

As a club we meet every Monday in the University swimming pool 8.15-9.15pm and every Wednesday at the harbour from 2pm. In these sessions we play games, practice/ teach flatwater techniques and on Wednesdays we may also paddle on either the River Ystwyth, River Rheidol or play in the surf - depending on conditions. We organise many club trips at weekends, usually once a month, see the calendar for more info.

Socially we are a very active club, with an official social every Wednesday, starting in Rummers at 8pm. We meet up much more regularly as mates, so come and join the fun!

Where do I go?

To get to our boathouse: From the railway station, go left towards the petrol station. Go straight over at that roundabout. At the end of the road is a T-junction and you will be facing a very important pub called Rummers. This is very important because it is where every social will start. Turn left and go over the bridge. If you are walking, go down the steps on the far right of the bridge and follow the riverside path past the harbour. The boathouse will be pretty obvious after about 500m. By car; once over the bridge you will pass a fire station on the right. Take the second turning on the right (opposite Londis). Follow this road around until a small road on the right takes you directly to our boathouse.

To get to the pool: The swimming pool, if you haven't yet found it, near the sports cage and in the same building as the gym.

To get to Rummers: See boathouse directions...

What do I need?

All members must be a member of Club Sporty (the University Sports Guild) for insurance reasons. You should be able to swim at least 50m and we will do swim tests on your first visit, along with a capsize drill. To come to a pool session, all you need is something to wear in the pool (cossie/shorts), a towel and perhaps a t-shirt. For a harbour session you will need your cossie, a warm jumper and some footwear that you are happy to get wet. We provide wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets, boats and paddles.

How much does it cost?

Joining this amazing club only costs £5 for the full year. For that you get free use of all club equipment, free entry to pool sessions, club trips at cost price and lots of cool new friends. What a bargain!

Storing personal equipment

As a member of the club you can also store your boats and paddles in our boathouse for nothing. This is particularly useful if you live in halls and don't have much room. There are 3 keys to the boathouse which the committee keep. If you wish to get into the boathouse at any time, just arrange to get a key from a committee member.
